Complex surveillance camera systems of the type designed and installed by Property Monitors generally require multiple megapixel cameras located remotely from the location where the images are to be viewed, means for recording the images for later review and display, and means for transmitting the images from the cameras to the recorder. The recorder may be a free-standing device, such a computer with sufficient storage capacity. The recorder will include software specifically for processing of the images, so that images acquired over a given time range can be reviewed and individual frames selected.

The Internet is the desired means for transmission of images from the cameras to the remote recorder due to cost and ease of installation. However, available bandwidth may limit the utility of the Internet where a high number of frames per second and/or large images are to be transmitted. A wired connection is usually not an option due to the distances between the cameras and the recorder. Therefore, many installations will also require line-of-sight transceivers mounted at the cameras and at the recorder. Relays may also be required where line-of-sight is not possible.

Systems of the type provided by Property Monitors are usually in the range of $10,000 to $100,000 or more per system, plus normal maintenance costs. Therefore, it is critical to design a system that will meet the customer's current needs while permitting future expansion at the most economical prices. Sourcing of components best suited for the system is also of great importance from the standpoints of cost and performance.
